Thuis explores family as a system, one shaped by roles, expectations, and unspoken rules. Through the act of making a film together, family members navigate control, improvisation, and collaboration, blurring the line between performance and reality. The process becomes a mirror, reflecting the tensions, humor, and hidden dynamics that shape their relationships.

For this video, I returned to my hometown, located in the region of Westland in the Netherlands, an area known for its extensive horticulture. Throughout the film, viewers encounter characteristic elements of the landscape, such as narrow waterways (slootjes) and greenhouses (kassen), which subtly shape the visual atmosphere and situate the narrative within this specific environment.

Thuis onderzoekt familie als een systeem, gevormd door rollen, verwachtingen en onuitgesproken regels. Door samen een film te maken, navigeren familieleden door controle, improvisatie en samenwerking, waardoor de grens tussen performance en realiteit vervaagt. Het proces wordt een spiegel, die de spanningen, humor en verborgen dynamiek weerspiegelt die hun relaties vormgeven.

Voor deze film keerde ik terug naar het Westland, waar ik opgegroeid ben, een gebied dat bekendstaat om de uitgebreide tuinbouw. ​​Gedurende de film komen kijkers karakteristieke elementen van het landschap tegen, zoals slootjes en kassen, die op subtiele wijze de visuele sfeer bepalen en het verhaal binnen deze specifieke omgeving plaatsen.
